Stamped Concrete

Today the leading edge of concrete is a process called pattern stamping. This involves “stamping” or “impressing” three dimensional patterns into colored concrete using special stamping tools. When the stamping is complete, the product is then cleaned then sealed highlighting the colors and providing greater stain and weather resistance. This surface then combines the beauty of masonry with the durability of concrete.

Stamped concrete is concrete that is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile and even wood. Stamped concrete is used to beautify pool decks, patios, driveways, entries and courtyards. Stamped concrete is very cost effective as it is usually 1/3 less the price of installing natural materials.

Colors and patterns for stamped concrete are often chosen to blend with the stone or tile elements of the residence. With a large selection of patterns and limitless color combinations, stamped concrete gives you the versatility to satisfy the needs of almost any customer.

The color variations range from cool, blue grays to the warm, bronze tones. Mid Jersey Stamped Concrete always adds a slip resistant additive into all their jobs. This additive prevents accidental slippage due to wet surfaces.

Question & Answers

Will stamped concrete crack?

The nature of any type of concrete is that it MAY crack. To minimize any risk of stamped concrete cracking, it must be installed by an experienced, knowledgeable concrete contractor specifically trained in stamped concrete. A competent concrete contractor knows that the sub-grade must be of structurally sound material; the concrete mix must be at least 3500 PSI (pounds per square inch) and that nylon fibers or fiber mesh should be added to the concrete for reinforcement against cracking and that proper control joints/expansion joints are cut into the concrete. Should the concrete crack despite these measures, the crack is almost always of the “hair-line” variety. Most of your friends/guests will never know its there unless you point it out to them! Salt eats ALL types of masonry installations including concrete. During the winter use sand or calcium chloride.

Will the colors of stamped concrete fade?

The pigment that is worked into the surface of the concrete is a synthetic metal oxide pigment, the same as used in making brick which does not noticeably fade for many, many years. Mid Jersey Stamped Concrete recommends resealing every 2 or 3 years. If you wait longer, you may notice the color fading slightly. But just like waxing a car, reseal your stamped concrete and the color will be as vibrant as the day it was installed.
